Admiral Bernard Rogel, Chief of Staff of the French Navy, was on an official visit to Malaysia from 6 to 8 June 2013 at the invitation of his counterpart, Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz bin Hj Jaafar. The visit took place in two stages with meetings and presentations in Kuala Lumpur, and a trip to Kota Kinabalu, where the submarine force of the Malaysian navy is based. Admiral Rogel also met with Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri, the newly-appointed Deputy Defense Minister.

Fête de la Musique, co-organised by the Alliance Française Kuala Lumpur, the Embassy of France and Help University, enters its 10th anniversary this year.

This year, the popular event gets a notch higher as it reminisces the original French concept allowing professional and amateur groups to perform in bars and restaurants in the lively Jalan Mesui, described as one of the best nightlife spots in the capital during weekdays and weekends.

Fête de la Musique 2013 will be celebrated in 8 different bars and restaurants, each host a special music scene throughout the night. Find your own taste among reggae, rock, electro-pop, world music, folk and blues, R'n'B, jazz without forgetting Malay traditional music! Participants this year include the Pony Pony Run Run, leading group of French electro-pop scene. More than twenty Malaysian groups will be performing with them that night for Fête de la Musique, which promises to be exceptional!

Franco-German consultations in Kuala Lumpur

The embassies of France and Germany in Malaysia held their annual bilateral consultations on May 9, 2013, marked the Europe Day.

Co-chaired by the Ambassador of France, Mme ine Dorance, and the German Ambassador, Dr Guenter Gruber, these consultations, organised as a meeting followed by a luncheon at the residence of France, offered an opportunity for heads of departments from both embassies to share their in-depth analysis on the foreign policy of Malaysia, the internal politics of the country, the economic and trade relations, cultural cooperation, defense issues as well as administrative and consular affairs.

France and Germany celebrate their 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty this year.

Opening of the 12th French Art & Film Festival (FAFF)

The 12th edition of the French Art & Film Festival (FAFF) was opened on April 25, 2013 by the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib, Mme Martine Dorance, Ambassador of France, and Tengku Zatashah binti Sultan Idris Shah, President of Alliance Francaise.

More than 300 guests were invited to the Golden Screen Cinema (GSC), Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for this ceremony preceded by a cocktail offered by Martell Pernod Ricard and the Westin Kuala Lumpur. The evening continued with the screening of Populaire, a comedy by Régis Roinsard, starring Romain Duris, Déborah François and Bérénice Béjo.

The importance of culture in the exchange between our two countries has been highlighted in the opening and welcome speech. Jointly organized by the Embassy of France and the Alliance Française, FAFF is now the largest foreign festival in Malaysia. The detailed program of the 2013 edition is available here.

Air France inaugurates its Paris-Kuala Lumpur link

: The arrival of Air France's first flight in Kuala Lumpur

Air France inaugurates its direct connection to Malaysia, now served with three flights per week from Paris.

Departures from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle are on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays with arrival in KLIA the next day, and return flights leaving Kuala Lumpur are on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The first flight arrived in Kuala Lumpur on April 23, 2013. On this occasion, a reception was held at the Residence of France in the presence of the CEO of Air France, Alexandre de Juniac, and many guests. The animated evening included a parade held by crews showcasing the evolution of their uniforms over the years.

The French Art and Film Festival 2013!

The Alliance Française Kuala Lumpur and the Embassy of France present the 12th edition of the French Art and Film Festival (FAFF 2013) from April 25 to May 12 in Kuala Lumpur and from May 16 to 26 in Penang. This major French event of the cultural calendar in Malaysia offers you the opportunity to celebrate the French culture through many cultural events: films, circus, exhibition, French market as well as wine and champagne tastings.

Supported by the French Institute, the festival this year offers a wide choice of films ranging from hilarious comedies, action-packed thrillers, through movies to enjoy with family and a retrospective honoring Juliette Binoche, one of the greatest contemporary French actresses. These films will be screened at the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) Kuala Lumpur (Pavilion, Mid Valley and One Utama) from April 25 to May 12 and Penang (GSC Gurney Plaza) from May 16 to 26.

An exhibition entitled “Vertical/Horizontal, Indoor/Outdoor” by artist photographer Françoise Huguier will be held at the Westin Hotel from May 10 to 24. Discover the ambitious project initiated in 2010 by Françoise Huguier on the middle classes of three South East Asian capitals: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

On May 3, on the campus of Taylor's University and May 4 at the Alliance Française, artist Freddy Coudboul will offer avant-garde performances involving the public, but in complete silent mimes! Freddy Coudboul is well known in France where he regularly participates in various festivals of street theater. In his show “Flochard in Bla, Bla, Bla”, Flochard is a clueless nice guy who drags along his solitude. He has an appointment, but the person never came. With enthusiasm and determination, Flochard starts to turn to golf, magic and even boxing. But alas, things do not go as planned. A burlesque show inspired by Chaplin, Keaton and De Funès.

The Alliance Française and the Malaysian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry are organising a French market in the garden of the AFKL on May 4 from 5pm onwards. The market aims to promote French regions showcasing their culinary specialties and traditional products. This is the opportunity to discover French gastronomy and products! More than 20 French companies based in Malaysia will be opening their booths. During this moment of conviviality children may enjoy games and also participate in Freddy Coudboul show with their parents.

For amateurs and fans, the festival organises an introduction to the sensory experience of Cognac and Champagne tasting on May 11 and 12 at the Westin Hotel. An appointment not to be missed by connoisseurs. You will discover the best ways to serve and enjoy this French specialty with a professional from the Malaysian Association of Sommeliers (Somlay).

M. Kader Arif, Minister Delegate to the Defence Ministry, in charge of Veteran Soldiers, was in Malaysia on March 25 and 26 in conjunction with LIMA 2013. He met many French companies and their Malaysian major industrial partners. With Dato Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Defence Minister, M. Kader Arif has discussed international news and major dossiers of bilateral defense cooperation.

"Find Europe in Malaysia" Photography Contest

Visit to Malaysia by Professor Françoise Barré-Sinoussi

French Professor Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine, was in Malaysia on March 19, at the invitation of the University Malaya.

During a luncheon hosted in her honor by the Ambassador of France, Martine Dorance, Professor Barré-Sinoussi was able to meet health care professionals, teachers, researchers and heads of associations involved in the fight against HIV-AIDS.

She delivered a lecture entitled "From Discovery of HIV to the End of AIDS: Past Successes and Future Challenges". She also prepared with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Adeeba Kamarulzaman, an international conference on HIV and AIDS to be held in Kuala Lumpur at the end of June 2013.

Mrs Sep Neo Lim, lecturer-researcher in French conferred the Palmes Académiques

On March 14, 2013, Ambassador Mrs Martine Dorance, awarded the insignia of chevalier in the order of the Palmes Académiques to Mrs Sep Neo Lim, lecturer-researcher in French at the Universiti Putra Malaysia and former president of the Association of French teachers in Malaysia.

This honor recognises the achievement of a long career dedicated to the French language.

French teachers, directors of French studies departments of universities and ambassadors of member countries of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie were present at this event.
